Who Is Responsible for Transportation
In Ohio, the school district where you live is responsible for transporting eligible private school students.
That means even if your child attends Mansfield Christian School, your home district is still responsible for transportation decisions.
When Your Child Must Be Transported (K–8)
If your child is in kindergarten through 8th grade, they are typically eligible for transportation if all of the following apply.
Distance Requirement
Your child lives more than two miles from the school.
If your child has a disability that prevents safe walking, distance does not apply.
Travel Time Rule
The private school must not be more than 30 minutes farther than the public school your child would attend.
School Status
The school must be a chartered nonpublic school. Mansfield Christian School meets this requirement.
Practical Transportation
The district must provide transportation unless it is officially declared impractical.
When Transportation Can Be Denied
There are a few situations where a district may legally deny transportation.
- Your child lives less than two miles from the school and has no qualifying disability.
- The private school is too far beyond the 30 minute travel rule.
- The school is not chartered by the state.
- The district officially declares transportation impractical and offers payment instead.
What Happens in High School
Transportation is not guaranteed for grades 9 through 12.
There are limited exceptions, such as certain career technical programs, but most families should plan for transportation at the high school level.
A Simple Way to Check Eligibility
You can quickly walk through this checklist.
- Is your child in grades K through 8
- Is the school chartered
- Do you live more than two miles away or have a qualifying disability
- Is the school within the 30 minute travel rule
- Was transportation declared impractical
If most answers are yes, your child likely qualifies for Ohio private school transportation or payment in lieu.
